Ukrainian drone strike burst apart a Russian oil storage

Ukrainian drone blows up an oil storage in Russia

This Friday, a Ukrainian drone struck an oil storage depot in western Russia. It caused a massive blaze, as told by the officials. Kyiv’s forces extended their attacks on Russian soil ahead of the war’s second anniversary. Four oil reservoirs that had a total capacity of 1.6 million gallons were set on fire when the drone reached Klintsy. Klintsky is a city with a population of around 70,000 which is located about 40 miles from the Ukrainian border.

The attack happened after Putin’s statement

The recently intensified effort by Ukraine to unnerve Russians and undermine President Vladimir Putin’s claim can be seen through the strike. Putin claimed that the life of every person in Russia was going on as normal before its March 17 presidential election.

More targets inside Russian border regions are going to be hit this year as vowed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The air defenses of Russia are concentrated in occupied regions of Ukraine and Kyiv. Hence, more distant targets inside Russia are more vulnerable as Ukrainian forces develop longer-range drones.

Traditional Orthodox Epiphany festivities canceled in Russia

Belgorod is a Russian city located near the Ukrainian border. It has canceled its traditional Orthodox Epiphany festivities on Friday as everyone is scared of the threat of Ukrainian drone strikes. Major public events are being called off in Russia for the very first time due to the drone threat.

Ukrainian drones have also attacked a gunpowder mill in Tambov on Friday. The place is about 370 miles south of Moscow. This was reported by the Ukrainian national media, quoting an official in Ukraine’s Intelligence Service.

However, as told by Tambov Gov. Maxim Yegorov, the plant was working normally, according to Russia’s RBC news outlet. Earlier it was reported that a Ukrainian drone fell on the plant’s premises Thursday but caused no damage by the Mash news outlet.

Another strike fit the pattern where the Russian Defense Ministry said that there was a Ukrainian drone that was downed on the outskirts of St. Petersburg on Thursday.

The drone’s target was the terminal

All the wreckage of the drone fell on the premises of the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal on the city’s southern edge, according to Vladimir Rogov. He is in charge of coordination of the Russian-annexed regions of Ukraine. The terminal co-owner, Mikhail Skigin, confirmed that the drone had targeted the terminal.

St. Petersburg is the second-largest city in Russia. It is located about 560 miles north of the border with Ukraine.

Air defenses electronically jammed the drone in Klintsky. However, it dropped its explosive payload on the facility as informed by Bryansk regional Gov. Alexander Bogomaz. Moreover, there were no casualties reported.

The same depot was targeted in May last year

Videos were shared on Russian telegram of what they said was the blaze at the depot and thick black plumes of smoke were sent into the air. 32 people were evacuated from homes near the depot. The fire is hard to put out and requires specialist equipment, Bogomaz reported as the situation was not an easy one to handle.

In May last year, the same depot was struck by a Ukrainian drone. However, the damage was less significant than this one.

Additionally, Russian shelling in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region killed a 57-year-old woman. A land mine there killed a man, the Ukrainian president’s office reported Friday.
