Oklahoma Hit with Multiple Earthquakes, Highest Magnitude of 4.4 Felt

Multiple earthquakes in Oklahoma

A series of earthquakes have been felt in Oklahoma. The waves lasted through Friday evening and Saturday morning. The two earthquakes that measured 4.4 magnitudes each were the most intense ones out of this series of earthquakes.

An earthquake of 3.2 magnitude hit near Arcadia, which is located in the northeast region of Oklahoma City as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The waves were experienced at 9:37 p.m. CT on Friday.

Almost 10 minutes later, an earthquake of 4.4 magnitude was registered just about four miles in the west region of Arcadia which was reported by both USGS and KOCO which is a local ABC News affiliate.

Multiple smaller earthquakes felt too

After this multiple smaller earthquakes were felt in different regions of Arcadia. Two smaller earthquakes of magnitude 2.7 and 2.5 were registered on Friday. Then on Saturday morning, tremors of the earthquake were felt again at 4:45 p.m. The magnitude of the earthquake was recorded to be 2.6.

Then the USGS data registered another earthquake which was now felt in Edmond, a place which is located in the northern region of Oklahoma City. The earthquake hit half an hour later and had a magnitude of 4.4. Another earthquake of magnitude 2.7 was then struck later at around 6:55 a.m. CT.

Amount of damage

No damage or injuries due to the earthquake have been reported from these regions as of now. According to the statement given by USGS, earthquakes of magnitude under 5 do not cause huge and horrendous damage. These earthquakes are known for typically causing disturbances and can be felt by individuals who are residing indoors.

Later on, a statement was released by the Oklahoma Geological Survey (OGS) on Saturday which reported the strong shaking that was felt by many in the immediate area and even across Oklahoma City due to the earthquakes.

The aftershocks that were felt by the people residing in Arcadia and Oklahoma were smaller than the mainshock. There is a very small fraction of aftershocks which can result in a larger earthquake than the main shocks that are experienced as reported by the OGS in their statement.

The seismic hazards are reported to be pretty high in the area. Hence, citizens are advised to secure their valuables that might be in danger due to the shakes that can be experienced during the earthquake. There is a possibility of strong aftershocks and the residents might be required to use the technique of Drop, Cover, and Hold On when there is a need.

The 2016 earthquakes

The most powerful record of earthquakes that have been recorded in the States was a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that took place on the 3rd of September, 2016. The incident took place near Pawnee, which is located in the northern region of Oklahoma.

Many Oklahoma oil companies were sued by the Pawnee Nation in 2017 as the companies were accused of injecting wastewater underground which was termed to be the cause of these earthquakes.

The earthquakes that have been recorded in the States on Friday and Saturday are summed up below.

  • 2 magnitude: Recorded at 9:37 p.m. near Arcadia.
  • 4 magnitude: Recorded at 9:46 p.m. near Arcadia.
  • 5 magnitude: Recorded at 10:04 p.m. near Arcadia.
  • 7 magnitude: Recorded at 10:43 p.m. near Arcadia.
  • 1 magnitude: Recorded at 5:36 a.m. near Edmond.
  • 7 magnitude: Recorded at 6:55 p.m. northeast of Edmond.
