Ohio Pastor Charges for Sheltering the Homeless, 3 Homeless Dead in Milwaukee

America freezing due to the cold blast

America is freezing due to the attacks of the cold storms. These extreme conditions have given birth to many questions like who is responsible for giving shelter to the homeless during these cold blasts.

The winters in Milwaukee are back with back-breaking, heavy, and wet snow along with the incoming arctic air. The temperatures in this region are not even in the low double digits. Moreover, many people are living without any power supply due to last week’s snowstorm.

The wind chills are in single digits and the homeless are more vulnerable to these extreme conditions. Three possible hypothermia deaths have been recorded by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office. The deaths that have been recorded are:

Three people found dead due to hypothermia

A 64-year-old man was found dead at 1:40 p.m. on Friday near South 5th Street and West Layton Avenue under a bridge.

A 69-year-old man was found dead at 1:25 p.m. on Saturday near North 35th and West Hadley streets. He was found in a vehicle that he used for shelter.

A 40-year-old man was pronounced dead at 9:56 a.m. on Monday. He was found near West Woolworth Avenue and North Sherman Boulevard.

Why churches are not providing shelters to the homeless

The main question that arises now is why don’t the churches shelter these homeless people.

The one reason that many think of is that once the Ohio pastor opened the doors to his church all the homeless shelters were tightly packed. However, the church was issued 18 zoning law violations related to keeping his church open to the homeless who needed shelter during these tough times.

Such cases like Ohio are one of the main reasons why people are reluctant to help the homeless. Pastor Chris Avell was summoned to court last Thursday just because the doors of his church were open 24/7 to provide warmth for the homeless.

This situation arose as Ohio law prohibits residential use in first-floor buildings in a business district. The church has been zoned as a Central Business. Hence, the church does not have a permit to be used as a residential building.

Condition of the U.S. due to the winter storm

By this time of the year, the homeless shelters usually fill up because of the low temperatures.

Shelters try their best to give warmth to each one of them, yet the people often get frustrated and tough it out on the street. Avell just tried to help these poor people but got into trouble himself.

The weather conditions in the U.S. are worsening day by day and half of the country is under advisory. The National Weather Service estimated that almost 45% of the country was under a wind chill warning.

The household population in the U.S. grew by 12% in 2023. The increase has been the sharpest since 2007.

Charges on Avell should be dropped

It has been argued that the charges on Avell should drop if we consider the number of homeless people in the country along with the weather. Instead, the city should find ways to solve this housing problem.

A school auditorium can be used for housing these people in distress. Maybe a city-run homeless shelter can be built to handle such situations.
