First refused to be charged in a murder case last year, now charged with a different shooting that left 2 dead, 1 injured

Juan Ferba killed 2 people

When Cook County prosecutors refused to file murder and attempted murder charges against Juan Ferba, a 27-year-old last January, many eyebrows were raised. He claimed that he acted in self-defense when he shot and killed a man outside a South Side liquor store. He even shot a woman who was sitting on a nearby CTA bus.

However, the prosecutors have decided to charge him with murdering two other people and shooting a third in February 2022. This event took place about a year before the liquor store shooting that they gave him a pass on.

A shooting occurred outside a liquor store

The surveillance video that showed Ferba, a witness, and a man named Kristopher Willett, arriving at a liquor store near 79th Street and Cottage Grove around 3:09 p.m. on December 7, 2022, as told by the prosecutors.

Ferba fired between 14 and 19 shots

Ferba appeared to comment to Willett as Willett exited Happy Food and Liquor. He then drew a gun and Willett pulled out a firearm simultaneously, and, as seen in the video cameras, Ferba fired between 14 and 19 shots. He struck Willett in the head three times, as told by the prosecutors during the hearing.

A 21-year-old woman was shot in her hand, who was seated inside a nearby CTA bus officials said. A video aired by ABC7 on the night of the shooting showed where one can observe at least four bullet holes in the bus windows.

Ferba was arrested in January, last year

After that, Chicago police arrested Ferba on January 10 last year. It was planned to charge him with murder and attempted murder. However, a prosecutor in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office rejected the first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder charge for self-defense as written in the report.

Rather, Ferba was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, and he was sent home on an ankle monitor. The case for the same is still pending.

Chicago Police task force reached Ferba’s house

A Chicago police task force went to Ferba’s home this month to charge him with murder and attempted murder in a different case. This time the prosecutors approved this case.

According to the officials, Ferba shot two people in February 2022. He killed one, and after that fatally shot another person with the plans of not leaving any witnesses to what he had done. The shootings this time occurred just a couple of blocks away from where the liquor store shootings would unfold months later.

Three members of the family were shot by Ferba

Three members of a family who have been identified as Gloria Binder, 69, her husband Vincent, 57, and her adult son, Erksine, were up early, running errands on February 1, 2022. A little after 6 a.m., they stopped in the 900 block of East 79th Street which is across from the Food town supermarket.

While Vincent stayed in the family car, Erksine ran inside while Gloria and. While they were waiting, someone opened fire on the vehicle. This incident killed Gloria and injured Vincent. Erskine came outside after he heard the gunshots. The gunman shot him in the back of the head, which killed him on the spot. The saddest part was that it was his 43rd birthday.

The surveillance video and phone records put Ferba at the murder scene according to the officials. Erskine was shot to prevent any witnesses in that murder.

Ferba has been detained as a public safety threat by Judge Mary Marubio. Marubio cited several reasons that she believed Ferba should remain in custody, in her detention order. It included allegations that he admitted to shooting two of the victims, along with his history of using a gun, and that he killed one victim to eliminate a witness.

He has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder.
