7 Dead, 2 Injured as Joliet Police Track Down the ‘Dead’ Suspect

In an unfortunate series of events, eight people were found shot dead in three separate locations over the course of two days in Joliet. According to official statements released by authorities, the individual responsible for these killings was also found but the suspect had evaded arrest by dying from a self-inflicted wound approximately 12,00 miles away from where the bodies were found. The 23-year-old perpetrator, who was later identified as Romeo Nance, had been on the run from authorities for several days before being tracked in Texas.

During a news conference, Joliet Police chief Bill Evans stated that earlier this week, his officers were contacted by the Will County Sheriff’s office regarding several people who were found shot to death in two separate houses in the 2200 block of West Acres Road, Madison Street. Officers who arrived at the scene found a total of seven people in these two houses who had all died from a gunshot wound.

A Heart-Wrenching Spectacle

Joliet police narrowed down Nance as the perpetrator on Monday, announcing a nationwide search for him. According to several witnesses, Nance was seen driving a red Toyota Camry. Nance’s last known address was on the same block of Acres Road. In addition to this, police investigation also revealed that Nance personally knew the victims.

The bodies came into light when the Will County Sheriff’s deputies were investigating a shooting that had occurred earlier. This earlier shooting had, reportedly, left a man dead in an abandoned area just outside Joliet proper a day prior. The common link between these two incidents is reported to be the red Toyota Camry which is owned by Nance.

This earlier shooting incident was reported on Sunday, where authorities had discovered a 28-year-old man bleeding on the ground from a gunshot wound. The man was later identified as Toyosi I. Bakare, who was originally a citizen of Nigeria. He had been living in the United States for the past three years.

The ‘Dead’ Perpetrator

About 10 minutes prior to this incident, a 42-year-old man had also been shot in the leg in Davis Street, Joliet. At first, the two incidents seemed unrelated since the two individuals were strangers to each other. However, the same Toyota Camry with the same license plate was spotted at both the crime scenes.

The Joliet Police Department announced a nationwide manhunt for Nance on Monday evening. The police department issued a warning for residents that Nance was armed and dangerous. At approximately 8.30pm on Monday itself, Joliet police officials received intel that Nance had been spotted by the US Marshals in the city of Natalia, Texas. Natalia, Texas is calculated to be approximately 1,200 miles away from the city of Joliet.

Joliet police officials said Nance was found dead from a self-inflicted wound in a car at a Valero gas station. It was reported that Nance decided to evade arrest and responsibility by a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he engaged in a confrontation with Texas law enforcements.
